Carmen: Meet the Artists!

Welcome Students and Teachers to Opera Online!!
Students in the Opera Company of Philadelphia's Sounds of Learning program saw the final dress rehearsal of Bizet's Carmen on Wednesday, September 28th, 2011 at the Academy of Music.

We have a very exciting treat this week! Our video clips of the week come from personal interviews with the Director, Conductor and Cast of Carmen! Our first two videos are interviewswith Rinat Shaham and David Pomeroy, the mezzo-soprano who played Carmen and the tenor who played Don Jose. How do the opera stars picture their own characters? Opera on the Air!!
On Saturday, October 8at 1 PM, radio station WRTI will be broadcasting the San Fransisco Opera's production of Richard Wagner's Siegfried (in German). The third opera in the epic Ring Cylce is fantastic a coming-of-age story in which a fearless young hero discovers his destiny in a world of Gods, dragons, and goblins. Siegfried must reject his adoptive father, forge a magical sword and slay a fearsome dragon to prove himself worthy of its mighty power - and the extraordinary woman who awaits him. Conducted by Donald Runnicles the opera features tenor Jay Hunter Morris as the hero Siegfried, baritone Mark Delavan as the God Wotan, and soprano Nina Stemme as the fair maiden Brunnhilde.

On Sunday, October 9th from 3 to 5 PM radio station WRTI will be broadcasting The AVA Giargiari Bel Canto Operatic Competition. Listen to the students at Philadelphia's own Academy of Vocal Arts, the opera stars of tomorrow, and vote for your favorite singer on a live, online poll! Founded in 1979, the Giargiari Bel Canto Competition has produced many winners who have gone on to successful careers on the international opera stage, such as Stuart Neill, Stephen Costello, Eglise Gutierrez, James Valenti, Dongwon Shin, and Angela Meade. Join us on October 9th and you can be the judge!

My favorite scene in Carmen was when Carmen gave Don Jòse the rose and the whole story started. I liked this because he just stood there in complete silence just thinking about Carmen and falling in love. He kept the flower in his pocket for most of the opera, which i thought was interesting since she kept telling him that she does't love him but he still keeps it in his pocket. I thought that he would throw the flower the first time she said that she didn't love him, but no.
