Reality TV goes to the Opera!

Welcome Students and Teachers to Opera Online! Opera gets a dose of reality this week as we look at popular shows around the world that feature opera!

Video Clips of the Week!
Our first clip is from the United Kingdom hit tv show Popstar to Operastar. Like Dancing with the Stars, the show takes pop singers at the top of their career and trains them to sing opera. In this clip, former member of the Pussycat Dolls and solo artist, Melody Thornton sings the seductive "Habanera" from Carmen. See if you agree with the judges on her performance!

Our second clip comes from the show America's Got Talent. Talent shows like America's Got Talent bring in aspiring stars from all walks of life. This audition features store clerk, John singing "Largo al factotum" from the opera The Barber of Seville.

In 2002 the English National Opera Company searched the English countryside to find the next great opera singer. Their goal was to find a non-professional singer who with one year of training would be able to step onto the stage with professionals and sing in their production of Rigoletto. The next clip shows the audition process from this show, Operatunity.

Opera on the Air!!
On Saturday, October 29nd at 1 PM, radio station WRTI will be broadcasting the Houston Grand Opera's production of Giacomo Puccini's Madame Butterfly (in Italian). At her wedding to Lieutenant B.F. Day after day she watches the harbor hoping he'll come back to her, and finally, he does. But he's back with a new American wife, crushing the geisha's heart, and ours. Shunned by her family, shamed in her community, and rejected by the man she loves, Butterfly sees only one way out. Conducted by Patrick Summers the cast includes soprano Ana Maria Martinez as Cio-Cio-San, tenor Joseph Calleja as Lieutenant Pinkerton, mezzo-soprano Lucy Schaufer as Suzuki and baritone Levi Hernandez as
