Welcome Students and Teachers to Opera Online!! This week we will take a look at the two lowest voice types. For the women we have the impressive contralto voice and for the men we have the basso-profundo!

Our first video clip is of one of the most famous singers from Philadelphia; contralto Marian Anderson. Although she did not perform on the opera stage, Marian Anderson loved operatic arias and would sing several of them in her concerts and recitals. This recording of her singing "Plasir d'amour" by Jean Paul Martini shows off the depth of the contralto voice.
Our second video clip is of one of the most popular basso profundo roles in opera; Sarastro from Mozart's opera The Magic Flute. In this clip basso profundo Kurt Moll plays the High Priest of the Sun, Sarastro. In the aria "In deisen heil'gen hallen" Sarastro confronts and comforts the conflicted Tamina, who has been ordered by her mother to kill Sarastro. The High Priest of the Sun assures her that he will not harm her or her mother.

Opera on the Air!!
On Saturday, July 23th at 1 PM radio station WRTI will be broadcasting the LA Opera's production of Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto. Verdi's powerful tragedy explores the dark side within us all through one of his most compelling characters, the court jester whose rage inspires cold-blooded revenge...and one of the most chilling final scenes in all opera. Conducted by James Conlon this opera stars baritone George Gagnidze as the hump-backed jester Rigoletto, tenor Gianluca Terranova as the flirtatious Duke of Mantua, and soprano Sarah Coburn as the innocent Glida.
On Sunday, July 31st at 1:30pm PBS Channel 39/WLVT will be televising the Great Performances at the Met broadcasting of Rossini's Le Comte Ory. Starring tenor Juan Diego Flórez in the title role, a count who competes with his page (mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato) for the hand of a lonely countess (soprano Diana Damrau).
