On Saturday, July 31th at 12:00 pm WRTI Radio will broadcast Los Angeles's Opera Company's production of Die Walkure, by Richard Wagner conducted by James Conlon. It's the second opera in his four-part Ring of the Nibelung.
The "Ring Cycle" turns to the human sphere with Die Walkure, highlighted by some of Wagner's most memorable music, with such highlights as the rousing "Ride of the Valkyries," Wotan's heart-breaking farewell to his beloved daughter, and the finale's "Magic Fire Music." As Wagner's epic "Ring" continues, Wotan, king of the gods, hopes that his mortal son Siegmund might help him regain the ring. But Siegmund's adulterous and incestuous love for his twin sister Sieglinde infuriates Fricka, goddess of marriage. Brunnhilde (the titular Valkyrie, one of Wotan's divine warrior maiden daughters) attempts to protect Siegmund, but her bold disobedience leads to a terrible punishment.
One of the world's most popular operas, Bizet's Carmen will be on WHYY - 12 on Sunday afternoon from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm. The performance is from the Metropolitan Opera and stars mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča as Carmen, tenor Roberto Alagna as her lover Don José, soprano Barbara Frittoli as Micaëla, and baritone Teddy Tahu-Rhodes as the toreador Escamillo. An all-star cast is led by Placido Domingo and soprano Anja Kampe, "the definitive Sieglinde and Siegmund of this century's first decade" (The Washington Post). A world-celebrated cast includes Linda Watson (Brunnhilde), Michelle DeYoung (Fricka), Vitalij Kowaljow (Wotan) and Eric Halfvarson (Hunding).
