Opera Online Mothers Day Special!

Welcome students and teachers to Opera Online! This week, before we start talking about Gluck’s Orphee & Eurydice I thought we might take a minute to appreciate Operatic Mothers; after all, it was mother’s day last Sunday!

The Good Mother VS. the Bad Mother

Opera on the Air

Affectionately known as "Cav and Pag," Cavalleria rusticana (premiere 1890) and Pagliacci (premiere 1892) are two of the most popular examples of the "verismo style" in opera - focusing on ordinary people from working classes. "Cav and Pag" present the situations of salt-of-the-earth human beings in small Italian villages.

On Sunday May 15th at 1pm, WRTI radio will broadcast these two operas. Tenor Luciano Pavarotti stars in Leoncavello's Pagliacci, conducted by Ricardo Muti leading the Philadelphia Orchestra.


A TASTE OF OPERA PROGRAM

A Taste of Opera is a free recital that helps prepare Philadelphia area audiences for Opera Company of Philadelphia productions. Held on the Sunday prior to the production's opening night, A Taste of Opera uses a lecture/recital format to provide insights into the opera by exploring the life of the composer. The presentation is highlighted with performances of excerpts from the opera or the composer's other works to familiarize patrons with the composer's musical language.

This event will be held at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in the second floor rotunda of the Historic Building at 118 N. Broad Street from 2:00 to 3:00 PM.

To register for this event please send your name, address, phone number and the number of people in your party to operaoutreach@operaphila.org . This event is general admission only. Tickets are not issued for A Taste of Opera, but please make sure to stop by the registration table in the museum.
