Welcome students and teachers to Opera Online. Beginning May 7th the Opera Company of Philadelphia presents their new production of Giuseppe Verdi’s La traviata. Over the next few weeks we will look at the story behind La traviata, the cast, Verdi and the music.

Opera on the Air
There are two great operas that you can listen to and see this weekend.
On Saturday, March 27 at 1pm WRTI Radio will broadcast the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Ambroise Thomas: HAMLET conducted by Louis Langree (Met Opera Debut). The cast includes Marlis Petersen as Opheile, Jennifer larmore as Gertude, Toby Spence as Laerte, Simon keenlyside as Hamlet and James Morris as Claudius. So tune in to 90.1 FM or listen on the website.
On Sunday, March 27th at 3pm WHYY-TV 12 will telecast the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Jacques Offenbach’s grand opera, Les Contes d’Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann). It stars tenor Joseph Calleja from Malta; sopranos Anna Netrebko (the Russian star who sang for the Opera Company of Philadelphia a few years ago in Bellini’s The Capulets and the Montagues, Kathleen Kim from Korea, Russia’s Ekaterina Gubanova; American mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey, and American baritone Alan Held.
